Arc lamp. The arc lamp is composed of a weighted stand extending towards an arm that is shaped like an arc. Given such configuration, lamplight is usually radiating downwards, making the arc lamp perfect for places where reading or table lamps cannot be placed or installed easily. Because it has a unique shape, table lamps are also popular in both transitional and contemporary interiors.
As if this were not enough, the central top socket is encased in a large metal cup which holds a white waffle patterned glass bowl that reflects light upward to bounce of the ceiling. A fabric or silk shade (also called JUNIOR shade) rests upon the glass reflector bowl to reflect light downward for reading. A single arm light can provide a simple night light or at it brightest setting, it can light up an entire room. There is no brighter lamp or more versatile lamp available anywhere today and it was designed and made nearly 100 years ago!
These lamps are used in conjunction with overhead lights to provide visual interest and additional lighting for reading. Oftentimes, floor lamps are selected by homeowners by matching it with the overall design of the whole space, from the modern stainless steel to tiffany floor lamps. Because they are free standing, these lamps can be placed anywhere in the room near an electrical outlet or a favorite reading area. Floor lamps may be intended for lighting while others may be built in with shelves or racks. Because of its flexibility, these lamps should be placed in areas where children will not trip on them. Probably the best place for them is in corners or to the sides of living room furniture.
